Home » Boys' Basketball NewsHenry, Welmer spark Columbus North past Flashes 76-65 in boys basketballDecember 7, 2012 Columbus North High School COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Evan Henry poured in 21 points and classmate Elliott Welmer came off the bench for 16 more Friday night (Dec. 7), leading the Columbus North boys basketball team to a 76-65 victory over Franklin Central in Memorial Gym.
Sophomore Josh Speidel added 14 points while senior Tori Jackson contributed eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Conference Indiana.
Senior Forrester Sims scored a game-high 24 points for the Flashes (2-2, 0-1).
The teams battled throughout the first half with Columbus North taking a 30-28 edge to the break. The Bull Dogs used a 18-8 third-quarter burst -- fueled by a flurry of Welmer 3-pointers -- as they pushed their advantage to 48-36 at the third stop.
The hosts continued to add to their lead early in the final period, going up 63-43. However, the Flashes rallied and briefly saw their deficit cut to single digits before Henry and senior Garrett Larson made a series of free throws to seal the decision.
For the game, Columbus North hit 53 percent from the field (26 of 49) while limiting the Flashes to 37 percent accuracy (23 of 63). Included in CN's firing was 53 percent from 3-point land (9 of 17); Welmer was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field, including 4-of-4 beyond the arc.
The teams split the sub-varsity games.
Junior Christian Glass scored 17 points, sophomore Kooper Glick added 15 and sophomore Trent Larson had 11 as the Columbus North JV prevailed 54-39. Freshman Marcus Burk led Franklin Central with 11 points, and sophomore Anthony Cerbone had nine.
Jimmy Weinke scored 18 points, including five in overtime, to lift the Flashes to a 54-43 win in the freshman game. Austin Kocken tallied nine points and Landon Arsenault and Robert Ritter each netted eight for FC. Cameron Fathauer and Collin Lollar each scored 11 points to pace Columbus North.
The Bull Dogs return to action next Friday (Dec. 14) when they visit Pike for another Conference Indiana encounter. JV and freshman games begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity game follows the JV at about 7:30 p.m.
