Columbus North High School

INDIANAPOLIS -- Sophomore Ali Patberg scored 21 points Saturday (Dec. 1), including nine points in a tight fourth quarter, to help the Columbus North girls basketball team defeat Pike 57-50.
Junior Kelsey Cunningham added 10 points and junior Tayler Goodall contributed eight for the Class 4A No. 2 Bull Dogs, who improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Conference Indiana.
Senior Hanna Ballard chipped in seven points, while sophomore Hannah Poindexter tallied six points and freshman Paige Littrell had five points.
Sophomore Brittany Ward scored a team-high 14 points for the Class 4A No. 10 Red Devils (4-1, 1-1), while senior Asia Coates netted 13.
Columbus North used a game-opening 11-0 burst to grab a 20-10 advantage at the first stop. Pike chipped away to trail 28-20 at the half before the visitors used a strong third quarter and two quick fourth-quarter buckets to go up 43-28.
But the hosts made a big comeback, chopping CN's lead to just 53-50 with 26 seconds to go before Patberg sank 3-of-4 free throws and Ballard dropped in 1-of-2 to seal the decision.
For the game, CN sank 17-of-24 free throws, including 12-of-16 in the final quarter. Patberg converted 7-of-10 fourth-quarter free throws while Cunningham made 7-of-8, including 2-of-2 in the fourth period.
“We practice free throws every day in practice," Cunningham told The Republic. "We know that when we have free throws at the end, that we’ll do well and we’ll pull through.”
Columbus North also won the JV and freshman games.
In the JV game, junior Emmy Schabel sank four 3-pointers en route to a team-high 14 points as Columbus North prevailed 50-43. Sophomore Jessica Wagers added 11 points while freshman Elle Williams had six points for the Bull Dogs. Brooklyn Hudson led Pike with 16 points.
Emily Kim tossed in 12 points and Kara Linn netted six as the CN freshmen won 28-16. Hannah Frey chipped in four points and Allison Bates had three. Symone Jones paced the Red Devils with nine points.
The Columbus North varsity returns to action at 8:30 p.m. next Saturday (Dec. 8) when it faces Greenwood as part of the Hoosier Invitational at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The game is the last one of a five-game agenda; earlier games are Lapel-Cardinal Ritter girls at 2 p.m., Frankfort-Delphi boys at 3:30 p.m., Danville-Cascade boys at 5:15 p.m. and New Castle-Mt. Vernon (Fortville) boys at 7 p.m.
Advance tickets for the Hoosier Invitational are $10 each and available at the CN Athletic Office. Tickets on day of game at the fieldhouse are $12.
The CN freshman team hosts Rushville at 6 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 6). That game will be followed at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 6) by the Columbus North JV against the Greenwood JV.
