November 27, 2012
Columbus North High School

Columbus North sophomore Ali Patberg has been selected an IBCA/Subway Player of the Week.
Patberg was chosen for the honor after helping the Bull Dogs to a pair of victories last week -- a 71-22 win over Shelbyville and a 64-62 triumph over Lawrence North.
A 5-10 guard, Patberg tallied 13 points, two rebounds, one assist and three blocks in the win over the Golden Bears. She then produced 29 points, six rebounds, five assists and four blocks as Columbus North improved to 4-0 with its narrow win over the highly touted Wildcats.
Others cited in the weekly awards program from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association were Homestead junior Sydney Buck and Frankton senior Kelsey Key among the girls and Angola senior Simon Brown, Hamilton Southeastern senior Zak Irvin, Loogootee senior Conner Wittmer among the boys.
All were recognized for performances during the week of Nov. 19-24.
The 5-6 Buck averaged 29.0 points over two games to receive girls' District 1 honors. Buck began her week with a school-record 38 points -- including a school-record eight 3-pointers -- in leading Homestead to a 77-44 triumph over Marion. She followed four more 3-pointers en route to 20 points as the Spartans (3-0) posted a 58-32 victory over Huntington North.
Key tallied 33 points and 13 rebounds as Frankton topped Shenandoah 72-32 and claim girls' District 2 accolades. The 5-8 wing converted 15-of-26 shots from the field, including 3-of-8 3-pointers, while adding five steals for the Eagles (3-2). Key has signed to play at Northern Kentucky University beginning in 2013-14.
Brown poured in 34 points in leading Angola to a 59-56 season-opening victory over Wawasee for the boys' District 1 award. The sharp-shooting guard made two 3-pointers en route to his big outburst for the Hornets.
The 6-8 Irvin, a Michigan recruit, averaged 27.0 points, 9.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists in leading Hamilton Southeastern to a 3-0 start in claiming boys' District 2 honors. Irvin opened with 31 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in an 81-61 victory over Fishers. He followed with 30 points, nine rebounds and two assists in a 73-66 win over Bowman Academy. Irvin finished his week with 20 points, nine rebounds and four dimes in a 73-63 triumph over Lake Central.
Wittmer netted 27.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a pair of games for Loogootee to earn boys' District 3 laurels. First, Wittmer tallied 25 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in a 61-36 victory over Attica. The 6-6 forward then produced 30 points, 11 rebounds and five assists as the defending Class A state champion Lions defeated Rock Creek Academy 70-49.
This is the fifth season for the IBCA Player of the Week program and the first season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a primary sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its third season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to "play hard and eat fresh."
Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA's three districts. Girls winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 2. Boys winners be selected from now through the week following March 23.
