Home » Football NewsCenter Grove defeats Columbus North 42-7 for football sectional titleNovember 3, 2012 Columbus North High School GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Junior Luke Calvert passed for three touchdowns passes and Center Grove tallied scores on an onside kick and an offensive fumble recovery Friday night (Nov. 2), lifting the Class 5A No. 5 Trojans to a 42-7 victory over Columbus North for the Sectional 7 championship.
Calvert's TD passes covered 30, 37 and 30 yards as Center Grove jumped to an early lead and never looked back in improving to 11-1 and capturing the sectional crown for the second consecutive season. The Trojans will host Castle (12-0) at 8 p.m. next Friday (Nov. 9) in a regional game.
The Bull Dogs, who saw their five-game winning streak snapped, finished 6-6.
Calvert completed 7-of-11 passes for 120 yards, including two scoring passes to senior Kyle Buchanan and a TD toss to junior Lane Morris. Junior Alex Lucas added 152 yards rushing, including a 57-yard scoring scamper early in the second quarter.
In addition, junior Drew Wozniak returned the opening kickoff -- an onside kick attempt -- 52 yards for a TD and senior offensive lineman Nathan Krohne rumbled 89 yards for a TD after picking up a Kevin Watson fumble on his own 11 to complete a 94-yard scoring play.
Seniors Jesse Tompkins and Jamaal Halliburton paced the Columbus North offense by combining for 156 yards rushing. Tompkins carried 22 times for 70 yards, while Halliburton had 10 attempts for 56 yards.
Junior Michael Vogel ran for a 1-yard touchdown for the Bull Dogs. He also completed 11-of-20 passes for 84 yards.
