Gedeon's field goal lifts Columbus North over Franklin Central 17-14

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Joseph Gedeon kicked a 27-yard field goal with 1:40 remaining Friday night (Oct. 26), lifting the Columbus North football team to a 17-14 come-from-behind victory over Franklin Central in a Class 5A Sectional 7 semifinal.
The decision gave the Bull Dogs (6-5) their fifth consecutive triumph and moved them into the sectional championship game at 7 p.m. next Friday (Nov. 2) at No. 5 Center Grove (10-1), a 62-6 winner over Franklin.
"I've always wanted to kick a game-winner, and I finally got the opportunity," said Gedeon, who made his fourth field goal of the season and his 13th over the past two seasons.
"Ever since my freshman year, I knew one of these days I would get this chance and I always have worked knowing that the chance would come. At the same time, I tried to treat it like just another kick."
Junior Michael Vogel led the Columbus North offense by completing 7-of-14 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns, while senior Jamaal Halliburton paced the Bull Dogs' running game with 66 yards on 14 carries at Max Andress Field. Franklin Central sophomore Aaron Austin led all rushers with 96 yards on 15 attempts, while Flashes senior Kyler White threw for 114 yards and ran for 62 more.
Columbus North coach Tim Bless said his team's comeback showed its character. Another team might have thrown the towel in when it was down, he said. But this is a squad that has battled back from a 1-5 start, so it was not about to quit.
Gedeon's decisive boot capped a 17-point rally by Columbus North, which fell into a 14-0 hole over the first two quarters. But a 7-yard touchdown pass from Vogel to senior Taylor Summa on the first possession of third quarter cut the Bull Dogs' deficit to 14-6 when Gedeon's extra-point attempt was blocked following a low snap.
CN then tied the game at 14 with 6:24 to go in the final period when Vogel connected with senior Tori Jackson for a 16-yard touchdown and followed with a two-point conversion pass to senior Skyler Farmer.
The Bull Dogs' defense then forced Franklin Central into a three-and-out, and Summa produced a 5-yard return on White's 35-yard punt.
Vogel opened the decisive drive that began at the CN 41 with a 37-yard pass to Farmer. Sophomore tailback Josh Holt, filling in for Halliburton, then ran four times for 12 yards before Vogel and Summa just missed connecting on a pass in the end zone.
Gedeon then came onto the field, and he converted a 27-yard boot from the right hash to give the home team a three-point advantage and allow the Bull Dogs to avenge a 42-35 setback from Week 4 of the regular season.
"I've been hooking some of my shorter attempts, so I just chipped this one in," Gedeon said.
Franklin Central (5-6) had one last possession, and White completed three passes around an 8-yard sack by CN junior Jacob Barnett to move the ball to FC 42. On a second-and-10 with about a minute to go, Holt intercepted White at the Columbus North 32 and returned the ball 17 yards.
Vogel then kneeled twice from victory formation to run out the clock.
Franklin Central took a 14-0 lead in the first half when Austin burst through the middle for a 55-yard score on the game's first possession and White added a 16-yard TD run early in the second quarter.
Gedeon gave Columbus North life late in the first half when he ran 14 yards for a first down on a fake punt, and the Bull Dogs used that momentum in the second half to pull off the come-from-behind decision.
"They didn't rush, so I just called my own number and tried to bring some momentum to our team," Gedeon said. "Coach has told me to be smart about making a read and then just trust myself. That's what I did and it worked out."
