NASHVILLE, Ind. -- Junior Mackenzie Caldwell raced to another set of records Saturday (Oct. 13), leading the No. 5 Columbus North girls cross country team to the championship of the Brown County Regional.

Caldwell established school, meet and course records by being timed in 17 minutes, 45.49 seconds over 5,000 meters at Eagle Park, breaking the school and course record of 17:51.09 that she set Oct. 3 during the Conference Indiana meet at the same site.

Caldwell outran the regional record of 18:06.00 that Bloomington South's Nicole Lucas set in 2011.

Her performance combined with solid efforts by senior Rachael Sollman, freshman Sierra Lax, freshman Nina Bouthier and sophomore Morgan Neal allowed the Bull Dogs to total just 18 points, 63 better than runner-up Seymour. Silver Creek was third with 99, Madison fourth with 110 and Columbus East fifth with 119 -- those five teams qualifying for the Brown County Semistate at 10:30 a.m. next Saturday (Oct. 20).

Sollman was clocked in 18:23.89 to finish second individually, while Lax was fourth in 19:03.98. Bouthier was fifth in 19:13.28, and Neal placed seventh in 19:42.57.

Freshman Allison Coffey (eighth, 19:53.11) and junior Aly Bowman (10th, 19:58.24) completed the CN lineup.

The No. 7 Columbus North boys were equally dominant. Led by senior Karson Tays, who prevailed in 15:41.73, the Bull Dog boys also amassed just 18 points. Silver Creek was second with 90 followed by Seymour with 111, Indian Creek with 111 and Madison with 130.

Juniors Andy Carr and Kaden Eaton placed second and fourth with respective times of 15:50.81 and 16:00.49. Sophomore Seth Williams was fifth in 16:09.18 and senior Kevin Rudzinski sixth in 16:15.08.

Sophomore Chase Ballard (seventh, 16:16.41) and junior Sam Starnes (14th, 16:43.08) also competed for the Bull Dogs.

"I'm really pleased with how focused our athletes were this week," CN coach Rick Weinheimer. "They competed very well and have created a lot of momentum for the Distance Dogs going into the final two weeks of the season. We feel great about where we are and where we are going."
