Seymour sweeps past Columbus North 3-0 in volleyball

Columbus North High School

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomores Janelle Peters and Karen Wildemann each recorded five kills Thursday evening (Oct. 11), but the Columbus North volleyball team lost 3-0 to Seymour in its final regular-season match.
Sophomores Makinsey Summa and Hayley McMahan each added four kills for the Bull Dogs (9-24), who fell 25-17, 25-17, 25-11.
Sophomore Alexa Pelley led CN's back-row defense with 12 digs, while Wildemann contributed 11 digs and senior Quin Shoultz had eight digs. Shoultz also produced a team-best 18 assists, while freshman Avery Wendel offered solid support in the middle.
"We did not come out with as much aggression or fire as we did during Tuesday's match," Columbus North coach Caitlin Greiner said, alluding to a 3-2 setback to Southport earlier in the week.
"I liked how Avery is starting to come into the middle hitting position. This is very new to her, on top of being a freshman. Makinsey Summa did a great job working Seymour’s middle hitters."
Greiner gave the Owls credit for playing well.
"Overall, I don’t think it was anything we did wrong as a team," she said. "Seymour is just fundamentally sound. Its setter does a great job of running the court and reading her opponent's defense."
Seymour also swept the JV and freshman matches.
The Owls took the JV match 25-9, 25-13. They also captured the freshman match 25-8, 25-11. Bailey O'Connor recorded eight digs for the CN freshman squad.
Columbus North returns to action next Thursday (Oct. 18) when it faces East Central in the first round of the Bloomington South Sectional. The host Panthers and Shelbyville play at 6 p.m., and CN and East Central follow with their match about 8 p.m. The two winners play at 11 a.m. Oct. 20 in a sectional semifinal.
