East Central edges Columbus North 2-1 in girls soccer regional

Columbus North High School NORTH VERNON, Ind. -- Junior Melody Lutz scored in the 78th minute Wednesday evening (Oct. 10), helping the East Central girls soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Columbus North in the semifinals of the Jennings County Regional.
The Trojans improved to 13-5-2 with the decision and advanced to the regional final at 2 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 13) against Bloomington North (14-5-2), a 1-0 winner over New Castle in the first semifinal.
The Bull Dogs saw their season end at 8-8-3.
East Central took a 1-0 lead against Columbus North when junior Hannah Patton scored in the ninth minute off a feed from Lutz. CN tied the game when junior Kenadie Carlson countered in the 39th minute off an assist from senior Ellen Hacker.
The score remained deadlocked through much of the second half until Lutz scored with less than three minutes to go. Junior Emily Koschmeder was credited with the assist.
Junior Madison Turner played goal the whole way for East Central and made two saves. Senior Elizabeth James was the keeper for CN and collected nine saves.
