Home » Girls' Volleyball NewsColumbus North, East Central to meet in volleyball sectional openerOctober 8, 2012 Columbus North High School The Columbus North volleyball team will face East Central in a first-round match of the Sectional 14 tournament.
The match is set for about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 at Bloomington South, site for all the sectional matches.
The six-team tournament opens at 6 p.m. Oct. 18 with host Bloomington South (19-7) facing Class 4A No. 6 Shelbyville (23-2). The Bull Dogs (9-22) and East Central (24-7) follow.
The Oct. 18 winners advance to the first semifinal at 11 a.m. on Oct. 20. The second semifinal at about 12:30 p.m. pairs Bloomington North (14-12) and 4A No. 4 Columbus East (26-2). The semifinal winners will return at 7 p.m. that evening for the championship match.
Sophomore outside hitter Janelle Peters leads the Bull Dogs' attack with 156 kills. Peters is supported by sophomore Makinsey Summa (130 kills), sophomore Karen Wildemann (119 kills) and junior Tessa Krempel (105 kills).
Wildemann leads from the serving line with 34 aces, while Krempel has 30 aces and Summa has 28 aces. Senior Quin Shoultz has produced 48 kills, 337 assists and 23 aces despite missing significant time because of injuries.
Defensively, Summa paces the front line with 35 blocks. Shoultz and Peters each have added 14 blocks.
Sophomore Alexa Pelley leads the back-row defense with 263 digs. Wildemann has provided 171 digs, while Krempel has 133 digs, Shoultz has 126 digs and junior Devon Roese has 124 digs.
Senior Jessica Wilgenbusch leads East Central with 278 kills while also producing 30 aces, 43 blocks and 169 digs. Senior Becca Weber has added 177 kills, while sophomore Nicole Sandmann has contributed 127 kills and 44 blocks.
Senior setter Becca Graham leads the Trojans with 512 assists and has added 27 aces. Senior Marla Gregg paces the EC back row with 306 digs.
Columbus North its seeking its first sectional title, while East Central seeks its 12th sectional title and first since 1992.
Shelbyville is the defending sectional champion and seeks its 18th crown, while Bloomington South chases its 14th sectional crown and first since 1996. Bloomington North goes after sectional No. 7 and first since 2005, while Columbus East is going after its 20th title and first since 2010.
This year's sectional winner will advance to a one-match regional on Oct. 23 that it will host against the Sectional 13 winner.
The regional winner advances to a four-team semistate on Oct. 27 at Seymour.
The semistate winner qualifies for the one-match Class 4A state championship on Nov. 3 at Ball State's Worthen Arena in Muncie.
Sectional admission is $6 per session or $9 for an all-session pass.
