Voegerl, Shaw, Wilson help Columbus North win boys soccer sectional

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Brad Shaw snapped a deadlock near the midpoint of the second half Saturday evening (Oct. 6), and the Class 2A No. 6 Columbus North boys soccer team went on to post a 3-1 victory over Columbus East for the championship of the Columbus North Sectional.
The sectional crown was the sixth in a row for the Bull Dogs (12-1-4), who advanced to the Class 2A state championship game last season. Columbus East finished its season 14-4-1.
Junior Keaton Voegerl gave Columbus North an early lead with a goal in the fifth minute off an assist from senior Reid Wilson.
Olympians senior Mitch Tabler tied the game in the early stages of the second half, but Shaw broke the tie in the 57th minute off a feed from senior Robbie Hughes.
Columbus North extended its lead with a Wilson goal in the 73rd minute, and the Bull Dogs ultimately claimed their 11th sectional crown since the IHSAA began holding a state soccer tournament in 1994.
Senior Chase Francoeur played all 80 minutes in goal for CN and was credited with the victory.
Columbus North earned a spot in the Columbus North Regional where it will face Richmond (14-4-2) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 11). The Jennings County Sectional winner (Jennings County or East Central) and Bloomington South (15-2-1) will play in the 6 p.m. regional semifinal.
The regional final will be at 7 p.m. next Saturday (Oct. 13).
The Bull Dogs are seeking their 10th regional title and their fifth in six years.
