Columbus North survives rain, cold to beat Bloomington South 14-6

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sophomore Josh Holt came off the bench to run for 108 yards and a touchdown Friday night (Oct. 5), leading the Columbus North football team to a 14-6 victory at Bloomington South.
The triumph was the second in a row for the Bull Dogs (3-5, 3-3 Conference Indiana), who found a way to prevail in a game played in a steady -- and sometimes heavy -- rain on a cold, windy night.
Quarterback Michael Vogel added the other touchdown for CN, which took a 14-0 lead in the first half and then hung on for the decision despite an 85-yard TD run by Panthers senior Johnathon Winters in the third quarter.
"The combination of wind, cold and rain, I've not been in too many games like this," Columbus North coach Tim Bless said. "Once we knew the (weather) forecast, it became a rallying cry."
The Bull Dogs played on a short field for much of the first half, converting their third possession into a Vogel 2-yard TD on the first play of the second quarter to cap a six-play, 17-yard drive after senior Alex Cornn returned a partially blocked punt 14 yards.
CN pushed its edge to 14-0 on its next possession. Holt burst over the right side from 3 yards out to cap a 13-play, 64-yard march that included only one play longer than 10 yards -- a 15-yard QB sneak by Vogel.
"Our offensive line did an excellent job," Bless said, noting that senior Luis Cambron shifted to center in place of injured senior Zak Ruehman and that sophomore Ezra Followell stepped into Cambron's guard slot. "It was 'next man up,' and the guys did the job."
Winters, usually a receiver, took a direct snap in a Wildcat formation on Bloomington South's first possession of the third quarter, faked a handoff and then dashed 85 yards for a score.
But the Columbus North defense stood up to every challenge thereafter. On three ensuing possessions, the Panthers (1-7, 0-6) managed just one first down and ultimately turned the ball over on downs three times.
The Bull Dogs totaled 209 yards off offense, all on the ground, while yielding just 135 yards to Bloomington South. Sophomore Jonathan Byers supported Holt with 36 yards, while senior Jamaal Halliburton contributed 30 yards before departing the game with an ankle injury.
CN's defense also claimed three Panthers' fumbles -- senior Solomon Knight, junior Logan Lunsford and sophomore Caleb Hawes coming up with the turnovers -- while sophomore Brandon Woods had a key sack to drive a nail into BS's final possession.
"I feel great about the way our kids are battling," Bless said. "They've shown heart and courage. And while we had a couple of guys go down (with injuries), we hope to get them back and carry on."
Columbus North returns to action at 7:30 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 12) when it hosts Southport in its regular-season finale. The game will be Senior Night, where 16 seniors will be recognized.
