COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Mitchell Miller and freshman Aditiya Mantri used a strong finish at No. 2 doubles Thursday (Sept. 27), lifting the No. 13 Columbus North boys tennis team to a 3-2 victory in a first-round sectional match against rival Columbus East.
The Bull Dogs (15-3) moved into the final of their own sectional at 4:30 p.m. Friday (Sept. 28) against Brown County (11-9), which defeated Hauser 3-2. The sectional winner advances to the Seymour Regional semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 2).
Miller and Mantri trailed 5-4 in the second set against Columbus East's Conner Jensen and Alex Galle, but they rallied to take three straight games for a 6-4, 7-5 victory and the decisive point against the rival Olympians (13-4).
Columbus East took an early lead when Jonathan James defeated CN junior Krishan Narsinghani 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. However, the Bull Dogs rebounded when junior Luke Red and senior Ernest Xi teamed to prevail at No. 1 doubles and freshman Kevin Luo won at No. 3 singles. Red and Xi beat the Olympians' Matt Fuehne and Alex Pegram 7-6 (3), 6-2, while Luo topped East's Jo Jo Woolwine 6-3, 6-4.
The Olympians drew even when Seth Meyer posted a 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-2 victory over Columbus North sophomore Anthony Sanders. That set the stage for the No. 2 doubles match, which started about an hour after the other four matches.
“It was anxious at the very beginning of the match when we were getting our butts beat at No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles, No. 1 doubles,” CN coach Kendal Hammel told The Republic. “We thought we were ready to go, but they came out and took it to us early. But little by little, we got ourselves back into it.”
As for the decisive match, Miller said he expected that he and Mantri would face that pressure.
“At the beginning, we knew it was going to be tied up 2-2,” Miller said. “We knew we had to do our job and just win.”
Said Mantri: "We had a duty, and we pulled it off.”
