Home » Girls' Golf NewsColumbus North's Anderson earns spot in girls golf State FinalsSeptember 23, 2012 Columbus North High School EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Columbus North sophomore Sydney Anderson shot a 9-over-par 79 in the Evansville Regional on Saturday (Sept. 22), earning a spot in next week's IHSAA girls golf State Finals as an individual.
Anderson recorded one birdie, eight bogeys and one double bogey in her round at Eagle Valley Golf Course to claim the final individual spot for the finals that run next Friday (Sept. 28) and Saturday (Sept. 29) at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.
Junior Sam McQueen added an 83, while senior Emily Morris carded an 87 and junior Lauren Backmeyer had a 91 as the No. 17 Bull Dogs amassed a team total of 340 to place fifth -- three strokes out of the third and final qualifying position. Sophomore Morgan Deis shot a 101.
No. 8 Jasper won the regional with a 323, while No. 13 Castle was second at 331 and No. 14 Evansville North was third at 337. All three squads advanced as teams to the State Finals.
No. 7 Bloomington South finished one stroke behind Evansville North and did not advance as a team. Columbus North was next, while Floyd Central (341), North Posey (351), No. 17 Columbus East (352), Evansville Memorial (352) and Madison (355) completed the top 10.
Madison sophomore Amanda Detmer shot a 1-under 69 to capture medalist honors. Detmer parlayed birdies on Nos. 1 and 10, a bogey No. 9 and 15 pars to her outstanding round.
She finished three strokes ahead of Castle's Kayla Katterhenry and eight strokes ahead of four players tied for third -- Jasper's Annie Getzin, Floyd Central's Eliza Hudson and Bloomington South's Cherise Otter and Emma Fisher.
Anderson joined Detmer, Hudson, Otter and Fisher as individual qualifiers for the state meet.
Teams advancing to state from other regionals are Carmel, Zionsville and Greenwood from the Roncalli Regional; Lafayette Jeff, Valparaiso and Chesterton from the Lafayette Jeff Regional; and Yorktown, Hamilton Southeastern and Noblesville from the New Castle Regional. Play was suspended at the East Noble Regional, so the final three teams from that site will be determined on Monday (Sept. 24).
Action in the state meet begins at 8:30 a.m. both days. All teams and individuals will play 36 holes this year for the first time. Admission is $12 per person (ticket is good for both days).
