Home » Football NewsFranklin Central defeats Columbus North 42-35 in footballSeptember 10, 2012 Columbus North High SchoolCOLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Kyler White passed for 289 yards with a touchdown and sophomore Aaron Austin ran for 104 yard and two scores, lifting the Franklin Central football team to a 42-35 victory over Columbus North in a game started Friday (Sept. 7) and completed Saturday (Sept. 8). Austin's 13-yard touchdown run with 47 seconds to go in the game proved decisive Saturday. The play capped a 69-yard drive that included a 45-yard pass from White to junior Corey Durm, moving Franklin Central to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Conference Indiana.
Interrupted with 7:37 to go in the second quarter with the score tied 14-14 Friday because of lightning, the Flashes used two TDs late in the period to take a 28-21 lead at halftime after Columbus North senior Jesse Tompkins briefly gave the Bull Dogs (1-3, 1-1) a one-score lead with a 6-yard touchdown shortly after play resumed Saturday.
However, White tied the game with a 9-yard run with 2:03 left in the quarter, then followed with a 32-yard TD pass to senior Aaron Neal on the half's final play from scrimmage.
Franklin Central extended its lead to 35-21 early in the third quarter when Austin dashed 35 yard for a score, but the Bull Dogs rallied to force a deadlock at 35. Late in the third quarter, Tompkins tallied a 7-yard touchdown and then Tompkins scored his fourth TD of the game on a 2-yard burst with 2:45 to go in the fourth quarter.
The Flashes returned the ensuing kickoff to their 31 and proceeded to cover the remaining 69 yards in seven plays.
Columbus North had one last possession and moved from its 39 to the FC 39 with 4.7 seconds to go. On what appeared to be the game's last play, Franklin Central was called for pass interference in the end zone on a heave from junior Michael Vogel to senior Taylor Summa. That gave the Bull Dogs one untimed down from the FC 24, but a group of Flashes batted down another Vogel pass intended for Summa to end the game.
Tompkins finished with 92 yards rushing, while Vogel completed 14 of 26 passes for 187 yards and one interception. Austin ran 21 times for his game-high rushing total for Franklin Central, while White connected on 13 of 21 passes and junior Marcel Price had five receptions for 114 yards.
Columbus North took a 7-0 first-quarter lead Friday when Tompkins capped a 76-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.
The Flashes made it 7-6 early in the second quarter when junior Logan Hall darted 2 yards around left end, but CN senior Shaquille Ash blocked FC's extra-point attempt.
The Bull Dogs extended their edge to 14-6 on the ensuing kickoff when Summa raced 96 yards down the right sideline for a return touchdown.
Franklin Central countered with an 83-yard drive, Neal running around right end for a 1-yard score with 7:37 to go in the half and White passing to Durm for a two-point conversion.
