Pike knocks off Columbus North 3-1 in volleyball
September 4, 2012Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Makinsey Summa knocked down eight kills and classmate Janelle Peters had six, but it was not enough as the Columbus North volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Pike.
Junior Tessa Krempel added five kills and nine digs, but the Bull Dogs lost the Conference Indiana encounter 24-26, 25-19, 25-11, 25-20.
Sophomore Karen Wildemann produced 20 assists, while classmate Alexa Pelley had 17 digs as CN fell to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in league matches. Sophomore Hayley McMahan notched two aces and 11 digs, while junior Devon Roese had two aces and sophomore Kileigh Huskey contributed three blocks.
"We came out strong in the first game," CN coach Caitlin Greiner said. "Makinsey Summa is continuing to step up her play and was a key component in our offense. Our record does not do a good job of reflecting our team’s abilities. We are continuing to get better and working hard to improve each match.
"Karen Wildemann did a good job of running the court. She and Summa are 'gamers,' and their aggression and fire are infectious at times."
Pike also captured the JV and freshman matches.
The Red Devils prevailed 25-18, 20-25, 15-6 in the JV match. Freshman Avery Wendel and junior Mara Krempel each notched six kills, while sophomore Autumn Kavelman had five aces for the Bull Dogs.
In the freshman match, Pike won 25-24, 13-25, 15-12. Olivia Teague paced the offense with seven kills, while Sydney Talkington was 29-of-29 on sets with 10 assists. Also, Rachel Copeland was 12-of-13 on serves with four aces.
Columbus North returns to action Thursday (Sept. 6) when it hosts Center Grove in a tripleheader. JV and freshman matches begin at 6 p.m., while the varsity follows the JV at about 7 p.m.
