Carmel tops Columbus North 27-7 in football season opener
August 17, 2012Columbus North High School
CARMEL, Ind. -- Senior Brandon Lugar ran for two touchdowns and passed for another Friday night (Aug. 17), leading Class 5A No. 1 Carmel to a 27-7 victory over Columbus North in a season-opening high school football game.
Lugar had scoring runs of 13 yards and 1 yard while added a 57-yard scoring strike to junior Thomas Baldwin. All three TDs came in the third quarter and helped break open a tight game as the defending state champion Greyhounds led just 7-0 at halftime.
Columbus North fought hard and kept the contest scoreless until the final minute of the second quarter when a lost fumble set up the hosts at the Bull Dogs' 37. Eight plays later, senior Jack Thompson bulled in from the 2 to give Carmel its halftime edge.
Lugar scored on a 13-yard quarterback draw on the first possession of the third quarter. Then on Carmel's third possession of the period, Lugar connected with Baldwin on a streak down the right sideline for the 57-yard score.
The Bull Dogs lost another fumble on their ensuing possession, giving Carmel the ball on the CN 22. Three plays later, Lugar ran around the right side for a 1-yard touchdown.
Columbus North continued to compete and countered with a score late in the final period. Junior quarterback Michael Vogel found the end zone from 6 yards out -- the TD capping an 18-play, 80-yard march.
"I loved the way we came out and attacked and did not let a strong opponent and a daunting environment overwhelm us," Columbus North coach Tim Bless said. "We gave a great effort for two-and-a-half quarters and while we don't want moral victories, we want victories, there were a lot of positives."
Bless praised both his team's offensive line and his defense for gallant efforts.
"We realize we're not a finished product in Week 1, so there are some things we will work on," he said. "We will work to get better, and I am confident we will. We have the makings of a very good team."
Lugar paced Carmel with 76 yards rushing while throwing for 111 yards on 6-of-9 passing. Thompson added 54 yards rushing, while sophomore Chris Perkins contributed 22 yards and senior Joe Scheffer ran for 19 yards.
Senior Jamaal Halliburton led CN with 95 yards rushing as he filled in for injured classmate Jesse Tompkins. Sophomore Josh Holt added 48 yards on the ground, while Vogel ran for 27 yards and passed for exactly 100 on 11-of-26 accuracy.
Senior Shannon McDonald topped the CN receivers with four catches for 53 yards, while senior Tori Jackson had four receptions for 34 yards.
