COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Tessa Krempel recorded seven kills and sophomore Karen Wildemann notched five on Thursday (Aug. 16), but it wasn't enough as the Columbus North volleyball team dropped its season-opening match to visiting Shelbyville.
Sophomore Makinsey Summa contributed four kills and two blocks for the Bull Dogs, but the defending sectional champion Golden Bears claimed a 25-10, 25-15, 25-20 decision in Memorial Gym.
Sophomore A.J. Lux pounded down 13 kills and senior Phebe Drake had 10 kills to lead Shelbyville (2-0). Lux also contributed three blocks, while junior Jacqueline Lux and sophomore Hailey Knecht each had four aces and Jacqueline Lux had 34 assists. Knecht tallied 11 digs, and Jacqueline Lux had 10 digs.
For CN, Wildemann and sophomore Devon Roese each produced two aces, while senior setter Quin Shoultz had 15 digs and Roese had nine digs. Shoultz also had a team-best 13 assists.
"We started off a little nervous, with it being our first match, but came into our game as the match went on," Columbus North coach Caitlin Greiner said. "We were much more aggressive in the third game and started to give Shelbyville some trouble.
"Quin ran a good offense that allowed our hitters to succeed. Tessa and Karen, our outsides, did a good job of finding the open spots on the court. Makinsey Summa stepped up in the third game and became more of a role in the offense. Limiting errors on our side of the court will help us close the gap in tight games."
Shelbyville also won the JV and freshman matches. The Golden Bears took the JV match 25-10, 25-10. The visitors claimed the freshman match 25-11, 23-25, 15-10.
Columbus North (0-1) returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 21) when it visits Bloomington North in its Conference Indiana opener.
