Home » Girls' Golf NewsColumbus North girls golf wins Martinsville InvitationalAugust 3, 2012 Columbus North High School MARTINSVILLE, Ind. -- Sophomore Sydney Anderson shot a 77 on Thursday (Aug. 2), leading the Columbus North girls golf team to the championship of the Martinsville "Artie" Invitational.
Anderson's 5-over-par performance claimed medalist honors and paced the Bull Dogs to a team score of 334, 10 shots better than runner-up Bloomington South and tops among the eight-school field at Fox Cliff Golf Course.
"We had a great team effort," said Anderson, who captured individual honors in a high school tournament for the first time. "I have won several junior events, but this is better than a Mountain Dew event because with those you don't always know who will be there.
"For this (tournament), I knew most of the players and there was good competition. It feels very good to win."
Anderson noted she had a good par on the eighth hole, narrowly missing a birdie, and was pleased with a couple of sand shots that put her in good position on other holes.
Senior Emily Morris tied for third in the individual competition with an 80, while junior Sam McQueen contributed an 86 for the Bull Dogs. Sophomore Morgan Deis and junior Lauren Backmeyer each had a 91 to complete the CNHS scoring.
"Everybody had good rounds," Anderson said of her teammates. "There was a bad hole here and there, but overall, everybody did well. It was a great day for the team."
In the team competition, Center Grove placed third with a 355 followed by Martinsville at 371 and Roncalli at 378. Plainfield was sixth at 394, while Bloomington North (419) and Danville (459) completed the field.
Columbus North returns to action at 9 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 4) when it competes in the Greensburg Invitational at Greensburg Country Club.
