CN's Smith completes girls tennis career in state quarterfinals
June 10, 2012Columbus North High School
INDIANAPOLIS -- Columbus North senior Allie Smith saw an outstanding career come to an end with hard-fought setback in the quarterfinals of the Indiana singles girls tennis state tournament Friday (June 8).
Smith fell to Floyd Central junior Olivia Boesing 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-3) in a match that lasted four hours at North Central High School. The other three quarterfinals were completed by the time Smith and Boesing were in the middle of their second set.
“A heartbreaker,” Columbus North coach Kendal Hammel told The Republic. “(Smith) had some chances, and Olivia threw a lot of different stuff at her, from slices to all the sudden pounding balls, and she was right there.”
Smith finished her season with a 18-8 record, and she will continue her career at the University of Indianapolis.
Boesing went on to place third in the singles tournament on Saturday (June 9), dropping a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Fort Wayne Canterbury freshman Leah Barnes in the semifinals and claiming the consolation match when Carmel sophomore Bailey Padgett withdrew because of injury. Boesing finished her season at 24-3.
Penn senior Alexandra Brinker defeated Barnes in the championship match 6-4, 6-2. Brinker finished 24-1, while Barnes closed 28-1.
Highland juniors Abigail and Vanessa Madrigal won the doubles title, beating Fort Wayne Dwenger junior Elizabeth Maxson and sophomore Audrey Rang 6-1, 6-2 in the final. The Madrigals were 17-0 for the season. Maxson and Rang finished 23-1.
