Home » Boys' Golf NewsColumbus North boys golf rolls to Greensburg Sectional crownJune 2, 2012 Columbus North High School GREENSBURG, Ind. -- Sophomore Michael VanDeventer fired a 1-under-par 69 Friday (June 1), leading a 1-2-3 sweep for the Columbus North boys golf team in the Greensburg Sectional.
Sophomore Christian Fairbanks added a 72 and junior Jacob Coffey a 73 for the No. 1-ranked Bull Dogs, who totaled a 294 to run away with the team title in the 14-school event at Greensburg Country Club.
Columbus East was second with a 326 and Batesville placed third with a 337 to also advance to the Providence Regional at 8 a.m. Thursday (June 7) at Champions Pointe Golf Club.
Senior John Arthur and sophomore Tanner Bennett each contributed an 80 for Columbus North to complete the team's scoring.
"It was windy, sometimes rainy and definitely cool, but after a difficult start we were able to play very well on the backside to claim the sectional this year," CN coach Doug Bieker said, noting it was the Bull Dogs' sixth consecutive sectional crown and 14th of his 17 seasons as coach.
VanDeventer had four birdies and three bogeys to lead the field, shooting a 2-under on the back nine after a 1-over on the front. Fairbanks was 2-over on the front and even on the back while closing with 10 straight pars. Coffey was 2-over on the front and 1-over on the back.
"Michael played solidly all day in winning his first individual sectional title to go along with his regional title from last year," Bieker said. "He closed his round by making a 60-footer for birdie on the last hole, while Christian continued his solid play as he pushed Michael for awhile for the individual title but just couldn’t get the putts to fall.
"Jacob Coffey was participating in his first sectional and shot consistent nines of 37-36 after shaking off some early nerves as he found himself 2-over through three holes. John and Tanner both played much better on the back nine after difficult and uncharacteristic front nines for both."
The Bull Dogs go to the regional seeking their second straight crown at that level. The top three teams and the top three individuals not on advancing teams will advance from the regional to the June 12-13 State Meet at the Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.
