Columbus North girls tennis falls to Jasper 3-2

May 27, 2012
Columbus North High School

JASPER, Ind. -- The Jasper girls tennis team defeated Columbus North 3-2 on Saturday (May 26) in the Jasper Semistate.
The No. 5 Wildcats improved to 19-2 and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the State Finals where they will play the winner of the Fort Wayne Concordia #1 Semistate. That round will be held at 3 p.m. Friday (June 1) at Carmel High School.
Senior Allie Smith and freshman Rosemary Yonushonis claimed matches at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectively. Smith defeated Jasper's Abby Rogers 6-0, 6-1, while Yonushonis rallied past the Wildcats' MeKenzie Hilsmeyer 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
But the No. 23 Bull Dogs -- who concluded their season at 16-9 -- were unable to hold onto leads at either doubles spot in falling in the semistate for the second consecutive season.
Seniors Rachael Miller and Melissa Sanders dropped a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 decision to Jasper's Ashley Rogers and Elizabeth Theil at No. 1 doubles. Seniors Jaewon Jung and Julie Reece fell to the Wildcats' Brienne Kuntz and Brooke Lueken 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
"If you told me going into this match that we would lose both doubles positions, I would have told you, 'There is no way,' " CN coach Kendal Hammel told The Republic.
At No. 2 singles, Jasper's Ali Schitter topped CN senior Whitney Olibo 6-1, 6-2.
The result marked the end of the high school careers for five of the six seniors -- Smith (17-7) is undefeated in five postseason matches and will continue in the individual singles tournament. The individual State Finals are June 8-9 at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
Hammel said his team will miss this senior group.
"You are not going to make up for the group of senior girls we have right now," he said. "I cannot say enough about ... their records over four years and all of their accomplishments.
"Will they be missed? Uh, yeah, and I'm sure a lot of teams are looking forward to us losing this group of girls. But it's just like any other team. We are just going to have to rebuild."
