May 22, 2012Columbus North High School
INDIANAPOLIS -- Freshman Devin Mann went 3-for-4 and scored a run Monday (May 21), leading the Columbus North baseball team to a 2-1 victory at Ben Davis.
The Bull Dogs, ranked seventh in the state coaches' Class 4A poll released earlier in the day, improved to 21-2 with the triumph.
Junior Jesse Tompkins (2-0) was the winning pitcher, throwing six innings and allowing just three hits while striking out eight. Senior Hunter McIntosh pitched the final inning and collected a save.
Columbus North took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior C.J. Dennis was hit by a pitch. That drove in Mann, who led off the game with a single.
Ben Davis tied the game in the bottom of the first when an Eric McKibbon single drove in Donovan Rhodes.
The Bull Dogs seized the lead for good in the second when junior Nick Wingate scored on a bases-loaded walk. Wingate had singled to open the inning and finished his day by going 2-for-3.
Columbus North returns to the diamond at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 22) when it hosts Bedford North Lawrence in its regular-season finale.
The Bull Dogs open sectional play at 6 p.m. Wednesday (May 23) when they face Shelbyville in a first-round game at Bloomington North. Columbus East and East Central play in another first-round game later Wednesday.
The two Wednesday winners play at 11 a.m. Monday (May 28) in a semifinal game. The other semifinal will pair Bloomington North and Bloomington South.
The sectional championship will match the semifinal winners at 8 p.m. Monday (May 28).
