May 9, 2012Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Freshman Devin Mann's RBI single followed senior Hunter McIntosh 12th-inning stolen base Tuesday (May 8), lifting the Class 4A No. 7 Columbus North baseball team to a 6-5 victory over Perry Meridian.
The Bull Dogs improved to 15-1 overall with the win and 5-0 in Conference Indiana, CN has clinched at least a tie for the league title. The team can clinch an outright crown with a win at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (May 9) against Bloomington South.
Against Perry Meridian (15-7, 3-2), the Bull Dogs overcame a 5-2 seventh-inning deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings. Junior Coleden Hoeltke's two-out double that drove home senior C.J. Dennis and Mann was the big blow.
After scoreless innings in the eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th, McIntosh reached base in the 12th on an error. He advanced to second on a sacrifice by senior Braden Pelley. Senior Preston Shelton then walked and with Dennis at the plate, McIntosh stole third to rattle the Falcons. Dennis ultimately walked, and Mann followed with a game-winning walk-off single to left-center field.
Daniel Ayers started for the Bull Dogs. The junior left-hander yielded five runs and three hits while striking out 11 in five innings. McIntosh relieved and improved to 3-0 as a pitcher. He allowed four hits and struck out 16 in seven scoreless innings.
"This was a huge win for North and a huge win for our program," CN coach Brian Muckerheide told The Republic. "We started out slow and lethargic. We didn't come out focused with the first pitch, but we got our wheels turning late."
Columbus North faces Bloomington South on Wednesday, then competes in the Whiteland Invitational on Saturday (May 12). The Bull Dogs open against Elwood at 10 a.m. and will face either Fort Wayne Wayne or Whiteland later Saturday.
