April 20, 2012Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Molly Crowe pitched a one-hitter and drove home two runs with a fourth-inning single Thursday (April 19), lifting the Columbus North softball team to a 3-0 victory over Lawrence Central.
Crowe struck out five while picking up her fifth victory as the Bull Dogs improved to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in Conference Indiana. Lawrence Central dropped to 4-3 and 1-2.
"Molly did a great job pitching and came up with a big two-out hit," CN coach Jerry Burton said. "We didn't do a great job hitting, but pitching and defense carried us."
In the fourth, senior Taylor Fisher reached on an error, and seniors Sydnee Jackson and Emily Scheidt followed with hits. Junior Alex Whirley ran for Taylor and scored the first run on an error. Crowe then produced a two-out hit that drove in Jackson and Scheidt.
Columbus North won the JV game 6-4.
The Bull Dogs are back on the diamond Saturday when they play three games in the Center Grove Invitational. They open with Class 4A No. 11 Greenwood at 11 a.m. and follow with Roncalli at 1 p.m. They conclude the event with a game against the Class 4A No.1 host Trojans at 5 p.m.
"We're facing three top teams, so we had be ready to play some good softball or it will be a long day," Burton said. "At this point, we want to play the best. We're not worried about the Ws and the Ls. What matters is how we are at the end of the year."
