MUNCIE, Ind. -- Junior Danielle McDermott finished 13th in the all-around on Saturday (March 17), leading the 10th-ranked Columbus North gymnastics team to a sixth-place result in the 40th annual IHSAA State Finals.

Senior Chelsea Stretshberry was 21st and junior Chelsea Wieland tied for 29th in the all-around as the Bull Dogs competed in the state meet for the sixth consecutive season and scored 105.600 points, improving their pre-meet seeding by two spots.

Fifth-ranked Fort Wayne Dwenger won the meet with 112.550 points, knocking off top-ranked and four-time defending champion Valparaiso at Ball State University's Worthen Arena.

The Vikings finished with 111.975 points. No. 4 Roncalli was third with 108.600 followed by No. 2 Portage with 108.425 and No. 3 Seymour with 107.425. Columbus North was sixth, and unranked Homestead and No. 12 Franklin Central completed the field with respective scores of 104.425 and 103.700.

McDermott totaled 36.200 points for the day to lead the Bull Dogs. She tied for ninth on bars with a 9.250, tied for 12th on vault with a 9.375, was 22nd on floor with a 9.050 and was 30th on beam with an 8.525.

Stretshberry finished with a 35.300 all-around score. She placed 18th on beam with an 8.975, tied for 19th on vault with a 9.300, was 23rd on floor with a 9.025 and was 38th on bars with an 8.000.

Wieland completed the CN all-around athletes with a 34.100. She was 30th on bars with an 8.325, tied for 31st on beam with an 8.500, was 36th on floor with an 8.450 and tied for 36th on vault with an 8.825.

Others contributing to the Columbus North effort were senior Torrie McClintic, who was 41st on floor with an 8.025 and tied for 42nd on bars with a 7.800, and junior Emma Geilker, who placed 45th on vault with an 8.300 and was 50th on beam with a 6.200.

Valparaiso junior Morgan Algozine won the all-around competition with a 38.750. Angola sophomore Alex Nickel was second with a 38.000 followed by Fort Wayne Dwenger sophomore Katy Linvill at 37.575 and Seymour junior Kelly Deppen at 37.450. Roncalli senior twins Cassie and Kaitie Schultheis completed the top-six medalists with respective scores of 37.325 and 37.300.

Algozine and Nickel split the event crowns. Algozine captured the vault with a 9.950 and floor with a 9.675. Nickel took the bars with a 9.750 and beam with a 9.600.

Fort Wayne Dwenger didn’t collect any individual titles, but the Saints had four gymnasts finish in the top six of three events. Linvill placed second on floor (9.600) and third on bars (9.575) to finish, while several teammates also shined. Brittany Trahin took second on vault (9.800), Kaitlyn Coffee was fourth on vault (9.625) and Carrie Brown claimed fifth on bars (9.475).

Following the event, the Schultheis twins were named co-recipients of the Mildred M. Ball Mental Attitude Award. The award is presented annually to a senior participant in the state finals who is deemed to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in gymnastics.

Athletically, both are expected to earn their 12th varsity letters this school year, each earning four each in cross country, gymnastics and track & field. Cassie and Kaitie each maintain a 4.4 GPA on a 4.0 scale, are National Merit Scholars and have taken numerous Advanced Placement and Honors level courses. Both are planning to study pharmacy at either Butler University or the University of Kentucky.
