March 10, 2012Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Chelsea Stretshberry, junior Danielle McDermott and junior Chelsea Wieland placed sixth, seventh and eighth in the all-around Friday night (March 9), and together their performance was enough to lead the Columbus North gymnastics team to a runner-up finish in the Columbus East Regional.
The 10th-ranked Bull Dogs finished with 105.325 points, more than a point behind champion Seymour, and both teams advanced to the State Finals next Saturday (March 17) at Ball State's Worthen Arena in Muncie.
The No. 3 Owls totaled 107.000 to claim their first regional title. No. 8 Bloomington South was third with 104.100, while Hagerstown (103.425), New Castle (100.900) and Connersville (96.625) completed the field.
"We've got a lot of tradition, and our girls wanted to keep that going," CN coach Sandy Freshour said, noting it is the Bull Dogs' sixth consecutive season to qualify for the state meet. "We didn't compete at our absolute best, but it was good enough to get through and now we get another chance. Our girls are excited to have that opportunity."
McDermott paced CN in three of four events, placing second on bars, third on floor and fourth on vault. Her scores in those events were 9.425, 9.325 and 9.425, respectively. Including a subpar effort on beam, she totaled a 35.000 in the all-around.
Stretshberry posted the Bull Dogs' top all-around score of 35.125. She reached that total with event scores of 8.900 on floor (sixth), 8.550 on beam (ninth), 8.600 on bars (10th) and 9.075 on vault (11th).
Wieland produced a good effort with a 34.750 in the all-around. Her event scores were 8.700 on beam (tied for sixth), 8.750 on floor (eighth), 8.925 on vault (13th) and 8.375 on bars (13th).
Junior Emma Geilker and senior Torrie McClintic completed the effort for Columbus North. Geilker was 25th on beam with a 7.275 and 26th on vault with an 8.225. McClintic was 28th on bars with a 7.050 and 28th on floor with a 7.000.
Seymour senior Olivia Coomer won the all-around with a 37.275. Coomer also won the vault with a 9.675 and the floor with a 9.550. She completed her night with a third on bars with a 9.350 and a tie for sixth on beam with an 8.700.
Other event winners were Seymour junior Kelly Deppen, who claimed the bars with 9.575, and Hagerstown senior Jessy Hoskins, who took the beam with a 9.400.
Columbus North is advancing to the State Finals for the 16th time. The Bull Dogs placed third in last year's state meet and have been in the top four in each of the past four seasons.
