Gomez receives MVP honors at Columbus North wrestling banquet

     Columbus North junior Zeke Gomez was named MVP of the Bull Dogs' 2011-12 wrestling team at the team banquet Wenesday evening (March 7).
     Gomez, who advanced to the semistate in the 126-pound weight class, was one of four athletes to receive presentations at the season-ending gathering in the school cafeteria.
     Teammates Corey Bland, Mahlia May and Tristan Warren also were recipients of special awards.
     Bland, a senior, was winner of the Bull Dog Award. May, a junior, was the winner of the Larry Perkinson Mental Attitude Award. Warren received the Brandon Shehan Award as the team's outstanding freshman who also displayed excellent sportsmanship and a strong work ethic.
     Gomez was the team's top wrestler and posted a 35-11 for the season. He placed fifth in the Conference Indiana meet, second in the Jennings County Sectional and third in the Bloomington South Regional.
     Bland posted a 19-7 record at 170 pounds, including a sectional championship and a sixth-place finish in the conference meet. May produced a 17-16 mark at 138 pounds with a third place in the sectional, a third place in the regional and a fourth in the conference meet. Warren finished a 3-6 varsity slate at 195 pounds, including a sixth-place finish in the sectional.
     The following athletes were recognized as varsity lettermen -- seniors Corey Bland and Eli Teague; juniors Zeke Gomez, Dallin Hinckley, Solomon Knight, Mahlia May and Sawyer Smith; sophomores Chase Chapman, Tyson Clark, Mason Day, Kenneth King, Jacob Lashley, Koda Pierce, Tom Schloss, Kyle Silver, Cody Speaker, Evan Speaker, Will Speaker, Luke Teague and Lexi Branch (manager); and freshmen Eric Alarcon, Logan Bland, Austin Elkins, Jake Larson, Daniel Petro and Tristan Warren.
     Those receiving JV accolades were juniors Andrew Hill, Darrion Holloway and Jermaine Jones; sophomores Connor Columbia and Andrew Jones; and freshmen Alejandro Gonzalez, Braden Hinckley and Justin Schoenegge.
