Home » Girls' Basketball NewsColumbus North tops Ben Davis 50-46 in OT in girls basketball semistateFebruary 25, 2012 Columbus North High School INDIANAPOLIS -- Freshman Ali Patberg scored 24 points and sophomore Tayler Goodall added 18 on Saturday (Feb. 25), lifting the Columbus North girls basketball team to a 50-46 overtime win over Ben Davis for the Southport Semistate championship.
Sophomore Kelsey Cunningham chipped in five points for the Bull Dogs (23-3), who earned a spot in the Class 4A state finals against North Central (22-5), a 65-50 winner over Penn in the Warsaw Semistate. The championship game will be about 8:15 p.m. next Saturday (March 3) at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute.
Junior Amber Jones netted 11 points and sophomore Danielle Cuttino had seven to pace the Giants (21-7).
Patberg scored eight points, Goodall six and junior Hanna Ballard two as Columbus North claimed a 16-12 lead in the first period. Goodall and Cunningham each scored three points in the second quarter as CN clung to a 25-23 edge at the half.
Ben Davis rallied for a 32-31 advantage at the third stop, but Patberg scored seven and Goodall tallied four as the Bull Dogs used a fourth-quarter surge for a short lead. But senior Jade Mills-Harris drained a 3-pointer from the right wing and Jones bucket forged a tie at 44 in the final minute.
Columbus North had a final shot late in regulation, but Patberg was unable to convert a pull-up shot along the right baseline and the game went to overtime.
Cuttino scored first in overtime, but Goodall countered by hitting 1-of-2 free throws and then 2-of-2 free throws to give the Bull Dogs the lead. Patberg then followed with 1-of-2 free throws and 2-of-2 free throws late in the extra session to seal the decision.
