Columbus North High School

BEDFORD, Ind. -- Sophomore Taylor Goodall scored 20 points and freshman Ali Patberg added 15 Saturday night (Feb. 18), sparking the Columbus North girls basketball team to a 58-50 victory over Bedford North Lawrence and the championship of the BNL Regional.
Junior Hanna Ballard added nine points and sophomore Kelsey Cunningham chipped in seven for the Bull Dogs (22-3), who won their 18th consecutive game and earned a spot in the Southport Semistate. There, CN will play Ben Davis (21-6), winners of the Decatur Central Regional.
The semistate game will be about 3 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 25), following a Class 3A contest between Mt. Vernon (Fortville) and Madison. The 3A game begins at 1 p.m.
In the regional final against Bedford, Columbus North jumped to a 16-8 lead at the first stop with Goodall and Patberg each scoring four points. The Stars (23-3) rallied for a 24-19 lead at the half, freshman Alexa Bailey scoring five points with freshman Dominique McBryde, freshman Jenna Allen and sophomore Brittani Rizzi each scoring three.
The Bull Dogs cut into the deficit in the third quarter, Goodall scoring 10 in the period as CN closed to 37-35 at the third stop.
Patberg then opened the fourth quarter with an old-fashioned three-point play, and Columbus North made enough plays down the stretch -- including hitting 13 of 17 free throws -- to claim the decision.
Allen finished with a team-high 13 points for Bedford. Rizzi chipped in 11 points, and senior Leah Myers had 10.
Earlier Saturday (Feb. 18), Goodall scored 14 points to lead three players in double figures to help Columbus North claim a 49-42 victory over Greenwood in the regional semifinals.
Ballard chipped in 12 points and Patberg added 11 as the Bull Dogs earned a spot against BNL. The Stars advanced to the title game with a 59-38 victory over Castle (11-12).
In the semifinal, Goodall scored nine of her team-high total in the first half as Columbus North raced to a 25-12 halftime advantage against Greenwood. Ballard added eight in the half, and Patberg had five.
The Lady Woodmen (20-3) rallied after the break, closing their deficit to 29-25 at the third stop as junior Deauna Evans scoring seven of her team-high 12 points in the period.
The Bull Dogs regrouped in the final period, junior Quin Shoultz scoring all seven of her points with Goodall adding five and Patberg four as they pulled away in the final minutes.
