February 12, 2012
Columbus North High School EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- It was a tough day Saturday (Feb. 11) for the Columbus North wrestlers in the Evansville Semistate.
Junior Zeke Gomez, junior Mahlia May and sophomore Mason Day represented the Bull Dogs in the event in the new Ford Center, but all three dropped first-round matches and were unable to advance to next week's State Finals in Indianapolis.
Gomez competed at 126 pounds, May at 138 and Day at 145 pounds. The top four finishers in each of the 14 weight classes earned spots in the finals that will be contested at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
"Our guys just had some tough draws early on," CN coach Nick Skinner told The Republic. "But this was a good experience for all of the guys and something to take into next year."
Gomez fell to Logan Wedding of Evansville Memorial. Wedding went on to place second.
May lost to Zach Hays of Center Grove. Hays placed sixth and did not advance.
Day succumbed to Brayden Montgomery of Danville. Montgomery finished third and moved on.
