BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Juniors Zeke Gomez and Mahlia May each earned third-place finishes Saturday (Feb. 4) to highlight Columbus North efforts in the individual wrestling regional at Bloomington South.

Gomez placed third at 126 pounds, while May was third at 138 as the Bull Dogs advanced three wrestlers to the individual semistate next Saturday (Feb. 11) at Evansville. Sophomore Mason Day, who placed fourth at 145 pounds, will join Gomez and May as Bull Dogs in the semistate.

That trio was joined by six other CN athletes in the regional.

Others who competed included sophomore Will Speaker, fifth at 113; sophomore Evan Speaker, sixth at 106; junior Sawyer Smith, sixth at 152; and senior Eli Teague, sixth at 160.

Also, Columbus North senior Corey Bland did not place at 170, and sophomore Luke Teague did not place at 182.

Five athletes from Bloomington South and four from Jennings County claimed regional championships.

Bloomington South winners were freshman Griffin Schermer at 106, junior Zack Runyon at 120, sophomore Devin Broukal at 126, junior Clayton Fiddler at 170 and junior Boyd Haley at 195.

Jennings County champions included junior Conner Montgomery at 132, senior Jordan Gast at 138, senior Brock Wathen at 182 and senior Iyan Bass at 220.

Other champs were sophomore Seth Clawson of Edgewood at 113, sophomore Jordan Partee of Madison at 145, senior Quincy Richey of Brown County at 152, senior Tsali Tough of Terre Haute South at 160 and Rob McKee of Columbus East at 285.
