No. 4 Columbus North gymastics edges No. 5 Seymour

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Depth paid off in a significant way Tuesday evening (Jan. 31) for the Columbus North gymnastics team.

With junior Danielle McDermott limited to just two events because of an ankle injury, her teammates stepped up and the No. 4 Bull Dogs pulled out a narrow victory over No. 5 Seymour, 104.750 to 104.125.
"It definitely was a good win," said CN coach Sandy Freshour, whose squad improved to 5-0 in dual meets this season.
"It was an all-out effort. Seymour made some errors that we took advantage of. To get the win, that's what we needed because we were without our No. 1 all-around athlete (McDermott). But Molly Elifritz had two season bests and Chelsea Wieland had two more, and that helped out in a big way."
Elifritz was the only event winner for Columbus North, taking the floor exercise with a season-best score of 9.275. The senior also had a season-best of 8.725 on beam.
Wieland, a junior, produced season bests of 8.575 on beam and 34.250 on all-around. Also, senior Torrie McClintic had a season-best 31.300 on all-around.
"We were behind going into last event, our floor vs. their beam," Freshour said. "But even though they had two fantastic scores (with Kelly Deppen and Olivia Coomer each getting 9.275s), we got just enough from Molly, Chelsea, Chelsea Stretshberry and Torrie to get the job done."
Deppen and Coomer tied for the beam crown, and one or the other was tops in the other events. Deppen won the bars (9.250) and all-around (36.450), while Coomer took the vault (9.350).
Columbus North returns to competition at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 1) when it hosts Martinsville in a dual meet.
