COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Brendan Michaelsen, junior Scott Haeberle and freshman Nick Wonder each was part of four winners Saturday (Jan. 28), leading the Bloomington South boys swimming team to the Conference Indiana championship.
Haeberle and Wonder also posted individual event records, while all three contributed to relay marks as the Panthers amassed 431 points to claim their sixth consecutive league title. Those accounted for five of the seven event records in the meet.
Columbus North totaled 393 points to place second without any event winners, while Bloomington North was third with 354. Pike was fourth with 236.5 followed by Perry Meridian (230.5), Franklin Central (224), Lawrence Central (138) and Southport (96).
Haeberle won the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.29 seconds, shattering the meet record of 1:00.05 set by Perry Meridian's Matt Jeffries in 2001. Wonder claimed the 100 butterfly in 50.72, breaking the meet mark of 51.63 set by Bloomington North's Max Irwin in 2011.
All three Bloomington South relays also set meet records -- the 200 medley quartet of of Wonder, Haeberle, Ian Finnerty and Michaelsen, the 200 free foursome of junior Logan Jastremski, junior Jesse Smith, junior Jacob Kelzer and Michaelsen and the 400 free unit of Wonder, Michaelsen, Kelzer and Haeberle.
The 200 medley relay won in 1:36.22, besting the mark of 1:38.80 set by Columbus North in 1998; the 200 free relay prevailed in 1:28.06, better than the 1:28.33 set by Columbus North in 1999; and the 400 free relay touched in 3:11.11, eclipsing the standard of 3:14.60 set by Columbus North in 200.
Michaelson claimed the 100 free in 48.71, Wonder the 100 back in 53.15, Haeberle the 50 free in 21.78 and freshman Brian Kress scored 420.65 points in diving to give Bloomington South four additional crowns, while Bloomington North's Irwin captured two titles -- both with meet-record performances.
The junior was clocked in 1:43.57 in the 200 free, beating the old mark of 1:44.43 established by Columbus North's Ryan Wochomurka in 2000. Irwin also won the 500 free in 4:42.42. That was than the mark of 4:45.73 by Columbus North's Patrick Norman from 1999.
