COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore triplets Evan, Will and Cody Speaker helped Columbus North wrestling get on a roll, and junior Zeke Gomez completed a strong finish as the Bull Dogs defeated Seymour 39-27 Thursday night (Jan. 5) in a home dual meet.
The pre-match flip had the meet starting with the 132-pound weight class, and CN fell behind early by dropping the first two matches.
The hosts rallied for an 18-6 lead on a trio of pins by sophomore Mason Day, junior Sawyer Smith and senior Eli Teague. But then the visiting Owls reclaimed the advantage with wins by Clark Thompson, Eugene Vivelo, Tyler Mellencamp, Tyler Loud and Adam Wolka.
Columbus North then closed with a flourish. Evan Speaker started the flurry by pinning Josh Rohde at 106 pounds, Will Speaker won by forfeit at 113 and Cody Speaker took an 8-7 decision over Levi Hill.
That gave the Bull Dogs a 33-27 edge heading into the final match at 126 points, Gomez clinching the competition by pinning Seymour's Drake Spencer at the 1:05 mark.
Columbus North returns to the mats at 8:30 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 7) when they compete in the eight-school Old Capitol City Classic at Corydon Central.
