Notre Dame assistant Chuck Martin was at Crete Monee High School in Crete, Ill., last week and was able to check on a pair of recruits. The Irish were one of six schools to offer 2012 cornerback Anthony Standifer a scholarship last week, but Martin also talked with the Crete Monee coach about Laquon Treadwell, a receiver in the 2013 class.
“He told my coach to tell me to keep working hard, stay in the weight room and train,” Treadwell said. “He wants me to come to the camp.”
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound receiver said he plans on attending the camp in South Bend next month along with Standifer. Treadwell hasn’t grabbed his first offer yet, but is enjoying the attention so early in the recruiting process.
“It feels good,” he said. “I’ve never had this much attention before.”
He knows a little about the Notre Dame football program already, which could help the Irish down the road.
“It’s a good quarterback school with a great football program,” said Treadwell, who wants to play with a good quarterback on the next level and follows the recruitments of the players a year ahead of him.
Treadwell caught 58 passes for 811 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior. He says coaches aren’t only impressed with his ability to get open and catch the ball.
“Probably what I do after I catch the ball, yards after the catch,” he said.
Treadwell also had 10 tackles for a loss, six sacks, five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries as a defensive end.
Treadwell, who also plays basketball for Crete Monee, is receiving interest from Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa, Toledo and Vanderbilt. He and Standifer have briefly talked about playing together in college, but not much about playing at Notre Dame.
He does have an idea of what he’ll be looking for in a school. “A good campus, great coaches and great teammates.”
In addition to Notre Dame, Treadwell and Standifer are looking at attending camps at Illinois and Michigan.
