Roba Sultessa of Cleveland outduels David Douglas' Joshua Kellebrew and sets a state best in 800 meters: Centennial Invitational track and field recap
GRESHAM – It was a two-lap duel to the finish that Cleveland’s Roba Sultessa won in beating David Douglas’ Joshua Kellebrew in a matchup of Oregon’s top 800 meter runners Saturday night at the Centennial Invitational.
Sultessa set a season’s state best with a time of 1 minute, 53.09 seconds, edging Kellebrew (1:53.31) by about two-tenths of a second. Those are two fastest 800 times run by Oregon boys this spring.
Sultessa was running side-by-side with Kellebrew until surging to the lead with about 300 meters remaining. Sultessa was able to outkick Kellebrew to the finish line.
“My goal was to get a (personal best), because I got my PR here last year,” Sultessa said. “Getting first place wasn’t really my goal, but I was trying to win.”
Other boys winners on the track included Lebanon’s Brayden Childress of Lebanon in 100 (11.14), Newberg’s Jonathan Bos in 400 (50.31), Jesuit’s Michael Godbout in 1,500 (3:59.84) and Lake Oswego’s Connor Bracken in 110 hurdles (14.75).
In was Bracken’s second consecutive Centennial title in 110 hurdles.
