BOYS SOCCER: Warriors shut out Jefferson, 8-0 (10/24/13)
October 28, 2013By Steve McCrea of Cleveland High School
Cleveland 8, Jefferson 0
The Cleveland men's soccer team took on the Jefferson Democrats at Cleveland Stadium on Thursday night. The Warriors spread 8 goals over 7 different players in a commanding victory.
The first goal came four minutes on, when senior Mo Abdikadir headed in a pass from senior Braxton Griffith. Just one minute later, senior Adrien Baures scored his 8th goal of the year, and senior Kevin Elliott McCrea earned his first of three assists on the evening. His second assist came in the 17th minute on a pass to senior Connor Rodriguez-Scott, who notched his second goal of the season. The Warriors took a 3-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Cleveland's dominance continued in the second half, with an early header by Sophomore Jorge Flores that glanced off the crossbar in the 45th minute. Two minutes later, Baures scored his second goal of the game on a nice pass from junior Gunnar Boag.
In the 50th minute, a cross by Boag was behind Elliott McCrea in the box, but he managed to reach a foot back and flip the ball over the defense, and senior Braxton Griffith was there to knock it home for a 5-0 lead. One minute further on, Griffith sent a ball in that glanced off a defender, and Elliott McCrea headed it home from inside the 6-yard box to make it 6-0.
Wholesale substitutions began near the 60 minute mark, but the Warriors reserves continued to dominate play. Sophomore Noah Adams scored his first varsity goal from just inside the top of the box in the 63rd minute, and junior Milan Mena rounded out the scoring with three minutes remaining on the clock to bring the final score to 8-0.
Cleveland outshot the Democrats 24-0 for the game, and recorded their 5th consecutive shutout. They face their last regular season opponents, the Benson Techmen, at Cleveland Stadium next Tuesday, 10/29. As one of the top 8 teams in the 5A, they are guaranteed a bye in the play-in round. They will play their first playoff game against a team to be determined on Tuesday, 11/5 at home.
