BOYS SOCCER: Cleveland wins league opener against Madison, 3-0 (10/3/2013)
October 13, 2013By Steve McCrea of Cleveland High School
Cleveland 3, Madison 0
The Warriors met with the Madison Senators at Cleveland Field on Thursday night in their first PIL league game of the season. Cleveland dominated play from the beginning, showing good ball control and excellent defense, as Madison struggled to get a shot off, while the Warriors had a number of good scoring chances in the first half.
The first good look came in the 8th minute, when senior Connor Rodriguez-Scott ripped a hard shot off the right post off of a low corner kick by senior Daniel Merchant. A minute later, senior Mo Abdikadir got a step behind the Madison defense and got a shot off from the top of the box that was saved by Madison keeper Aiden Fetter.
Madison had a great scoring chance in the 14th minute, when a Madison forward got free behind the Cleveland defense. Keeper Hubie Charman came outside the box to make a tackle, and was called for a yellow card on the play, but the ensuing free kick from the top of the box hit a Cleveland defender and was cleared away.
Cleveland continued to dominate play, with shots from Mo and from sophomore Jorge Flores in the 23rd and 25th minutes, a close-in shot by Noah Adams in the 36th, and a ball in the Madison goal off a throw in with 2 minutes left in the half that was waved off due to a foul called in the box. The half ended with no score.
Cleveland maintained control from the start of the second half, and got on the board in the 42nd minute, when Jorge Flores corralled a bouncing rebound to the keeper’s right and scored his second goal of the season. Madison’s fetter made three good saves over the next 8 minutes on shots from Mo Abdikadir, Flores, and Kevin Elliott McCrea. But Cleveland continued to attack, culminating in a blast from 30 yards out by senior Adrien Baures that beat Fetter to the short side and made the score 2-0 Warriors.
Barues tested Fetter again from the left side less than a minute later, resulting in a Cleveland corner kick. Merchant took the corner and placed it just inside the far post, where a leaping Charlie Clark put it away to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.
Madison continued to struggle to control the ball, and Cleveland had a number of other good looks, including shots from Rodriguez-Scott, Flores, and from senior Francesco Verna-Ketel, but Fetter made several impressive saves to keep the score 3-0. Madison had one more good scoring chance on a long shot in the 61st minute, but senior keeper Hubie Charman made an excellent diving save to keep the clean sheet for the evening.
Merchant hit a low shot with 16 minutes remaining that Fetter tipped just wide, and Elliott McCrea hit a hard blast in the 67th minute just inside the left post that forced another diving save, but Fetter kept the ball out of the net, and the game ended 3-0.
Baures scored his 7th goal of the season, and Charlie Clark notched his third, as the Warriors outshot the Senators 33-9 for the match. Charman also gets credit for his third shutout of the season. Cleveland moves to 5-1-3 on the year and remains #3 in the division 5A power rankings. Their next game is Homecoming against Franklin on Thursday, October 10 at Cleveland Stadium, game time 3:30 PM.
