BOYS SOCCER: Cleveland 2, Sherwood 1 (9/17/2013)
September 29, 2013By Steve McCrea of Cleveland High School
The Cleveland men's soccer team is now 4-0 on the seaon, with a win over 5A rivals, the Sherwood Bowmen, at Cleveland Stadium on Tuesday night. Midfielder Adrien Baures returned from an ankle injury a week ago to score two and lead the Warriors to a 2-1 victory.
Cleveland started off with good ball control, and managed two scoring opportunities in the first 7 minutes, one by senior Braxton Griffith and a second by senior Daniel Merchant. The Bowmen had their first good chance in the 19th minute, as sophomore Bryan Cortez-Perez converged on a cross near the left post and ran the ball right into the arms of senior keeper Hubie Charman, who held his ground and wrapped the ball up on the goal line. A minute later, Merchant sent sophomore Jorge Flores in on the right side for a close in shot, which was deflected high in the air by the Sherwood keeper. Cleveland came down with the rebound but was denied a second shot by a tenacious Bowman defense.
A Warrior foul in the 26th minute just outside the 18 resulted in a free kick at close range. Sherwood senior Andrew Burkur slipped a shot just to the right of the defensive wall and gave the Bowmen a 1-0 lead.
Senior defender Charlie Clark came forward and headed a cross just inside the left post with 11:00 left in the half, forcing a tough save by the Sherwood keeper. But at the 37:00 mark, Baures got a ball from a Merchant corner kick just outside the right top of the box. He hit a high shot across the goal and inside the left post, and the teams went into the locker room tied at 1.
The game opened up a bit early in the second half, with Cleveland senior Mudy Abdikadir getting a good shot off a pass from Merchant 3 minutes in, and Baures getting a good header off from a Merchant corner in the 46th minute. A minute later, Flores got another close-in shot that missed just left of the Sherwood goal.
In the 50th minute, Bowman senior Zephaniah Hollins got off a low cross to an open Cortez-Perez right in front of the goal, but his quick shot went well over the bar. Two minutes later, Baures scored his second goal on a great feed from Merchant to the left of the goal. He chipped it over the keeper's head and under the bar to give the Warriors the lead.
Cleveland controlled the midfield well the rest of the game, and Sherwood didn't have any other quality scoring chances, though they did get another cross in that was struck high over the bar late in the half. Merchant had two more near-assists, one to Mudy, who shot it over the bar in the 66th minute, and another to Charlie Clark, who had a very good look and headed it just past the left post with 14 minutes left on the clock.
The Warriors are now 4-0, their best start in at least the last 4 seasons, and will continue to occupy the top of the 5A power rankings. They travel to Forest Grove Friday night to take on the Forest Grove Vikings.
