BOYS SOCCER: Cleveland beats Wilsonville 1-0 (9/10/2013)
September 29, 2013By Steve McCrea of Cleveland High School
The Warriors men's spoccer team traveled to Wilsonville Tuesday night to take on their 5A rivals, the Wilsonville Wildcats. The emerged with their second road victory in two games, winning a defensive struggle 1-0.
There were no major scoring chances for either team through most of the first half, as both defenses kept the ball out of their defensive end, and most of the game was played at midfield. The first good opportunity came for Wilsonville in the 31st minute, when junior forward Jason Johnson got loose on a breakaway down the right side. This led to two corner kicks for the Wildcats, but the Warrior defense was able to hold. Two minutes later, Cleveland got their first good scoring chance, as sophomore Jorge Flores got a close-in shot off a pass from senior Daniel Merchant which went just wide of the right post.
Wilsonville senior Tyler Martin got loose down the left sideline late in the half, and got a good cross off to Johnson, but he was challenged and was unable to put the ball away. The teams went into halftime tied 0-0.
The offenses began to wake up in the second half, with Cleveland controlling the ball well in the first 10 minutes. This led to the first and only goal of the game, when junior Niko Kecskes won a ball and passed it up to senior Mudy Abdikadir about 30 yards from the Wilsonville goal. Mudy hit an arching shot out of the air over the outstretched arms of Wilsonville keeper Trevyn Vermillier and just under the left side of the bar.
There were a number of chances for both sides in the second half, as Wilsonville began to take more chances the farther the clock wound down. Cleveland had shots in the middle half from Daniel Merchant, senior Connor Rodriguez-Scott, senior Kevin Elliott McCrea, and another by Flores, who hit a header over the bar off a Malcom Jones throw in in the 75th minute. Wilsonville's Tyler Martin got very busy down the right sideline and got off a couple of dangerous crosses, including a near miss in the 17th minute when he hit freshman defender Carlos Ulloa breaking down the left side, but Ulloa was unable to convert. And junior Adam Kane had perhaps the best chance of the half off a corner from freshman Edgar Hernandez, but he was closely marked and hit the one-touch shot over the bar.
Cleveland had good looks from Merchant and from senior Adrien Baures, both in the 78th minute, but Wilsonville would not quit, and managed to get a corner kick with less than a minute left on the clock. They brought their keeper up in a last-ditch attempt to tie the game, which was almost successful, as keeper Vermillier got hold of a rebound and hit a shot off the crossbar with less than 30 seconds on the clock. Senior keeper Hubie Charman hauled in the rebound for the Warriors, and the game was effectively over, except for a late scuffle that earned Wilsonville's Kyle Roberts a late red card for pushing senior Charlie Clark after Charman had cleared the ball.
Cleveland is now 2-0, and returns to Cleveland Stadum for their home opener at 7 PM on Thursday night against 6A Tualatin.
