BOYS SOCCER: Summit 2, Cleveland 0 (11/10/2012)
November 14, 2012By Steve McCrea of Cleveland High School
Summit 2, Cleveland 0
The Cleveland Warriors traveled to Bend on chilly Saturday to play the Summit Storm at Summit High School. Whether it was the long trip, the cold weather, or the high altitude, the Warriors never quite got in rhythm and they ended up on the short end of a 2-0 score.
Summit scored at about 4:00 in on a long pass from Summit freshman defenders Samuel Buzzas that sent senior Glenn Sherman in on a break. Sherman hit a hard shot from the top of the box and put the Storm ahead 1-0.
Summit took advantage of the early lead and packed the defensive end, looking for long balls to set up scoring chances, and their strategy was very effective. Junior keeper Hubie Charman valiantly kept the score to 1-0, as he stopped two more breakaways in the first half, but while the Warriors had some moments of good ball control, they struggled to get good scoring chances. The half ended with Summit leading 1-0.
The Warriors' defense tightened up in the second half after another early save by Charman on a shot from the left side, but they continued to struggle to put passes together and generate offense. With about 25 minutes remaining, they seemed to find a second wind, and began getting some good plays together, resulting in a couple of free kicks and some throw-ins deep in Storm territory, but still were unable to challenge the keeper significantly. Their best scoring chance came on a long free kick by Charlie Clark with 19 minutes remaining that went to Connor Rodriguez Scott on the left side for a shot from 5 yards out, but the keeper smothered the attempt.
Summit put the game away in the 68th minute, as senior Michal Wilson took a run down the right sideline and crossed it in to a charging Summit player, who knocked it in for the final score of the game.
Cleveland had a strong finish and will be returning 9 of their 11 starters next year, so I think we can expect to see another title run in 2013.
No video highlights for this game, but I will post season highlights within the next week. Thanks to the Warriors for an excellent and exciting season!
