BOYS SOCCER: Cleveland moves to quarterfinals with 4-1 victory over Sherwood (11/6/12)
November 8, 2012By Steve McCrea of Cleveland High School
Cleveland 4, Sherwood 1
The Cleveland men's soccer team returned to Sherwood Tuesday night determined to prove they were the better team, after outplaying the Bowmen earlier in the season but ending up with a tie due to two late PKs awarded to Sherwood. They accomplished that goal in fine style, outplaying the Bowmen from start to finish at both ends of the pitch, and senior Cameron Craig managed to celebrate his birthday with two Warrior goals.
Cleveland got on the board at the 12 minute mark, when junior Mo Abdikadir fought for a ball on the sideline and crossed it to junior Mudy Abdikadir, who knocked it home from just inside the top of the box to put the Warriors up 1-0.
Sherwood sophomore Connor Carraher got free in the right corner in the 13th minute and nearly connected with senior Nathan Anderson in the box. A minute later, Anderson hit a corner kick to senior Charlie Paul, who headed the ball just over the bar for the Bowmen.
In the 18th minute, junior Mudy Abdikadir got a ball from the right side in to senior Nick Van Marter for a good look from the top of the box that just missed to the right.
Cleveland's second goal came in the 35th minute, when Mudy took a wide angle shot that caromed off the Sherwood keeper and was put home by senior Cameron Craig from about 6 yards out. Junior keeper Hubie Charman made a nice save on a hard outside shot by Anderson a minute later, and the Warriors went into halftime up 2-0.
Sherwood came out on the attack in the second half, getting three good shots off in the 44th-45th minute of play. Carraher first took a shot from the right side that Charman made a good save on. The ensuing corner kick led to a shot toward the right post that Charman knocked just wide. Another corner was awarded, and Carraher headed the cross just over the bar.
Cleveland almost got a third goal 9 minutes into the half, as Nick Van Marter hit a hard shot from inside the left side of the box. Sherwood senior Brogan Kearsley made the save, but the rebound bounced free and the Warriors were able to get another shot off from close range, that Kearsly was able to pounce on.
Cleveland fans had a touch of deja vu in the 55th minute, as the Warriors were called for a foul in the box and Sherwood was awarded a PK. Nathan Anderson converted the PK for the Bowmen, and the score was 2-1, creating an eerie sense of similarity to their tie game earlier in the season. Sherwood got another shot in the 58th minute, but then the Warriors started to crank up offensively.
Adrien Baures got off a good shot from the left side in the 59th minute. 7 minutes later, he threw in the ball from the left side to junior Kevin Elliott McCrea, who touched it back to him and screened off the defense. Baures hit a high ball that cleared the keeper and dropped in under the right side of the goal to put Cleveland up 3-1 and seal the victory.
The Warriors almost went up 4-1 in the 69th minute, when Elliott McCrea put a lovely pass between two defenders and sent Mudy in on a breakaway, but the keeper was able to cut down the angle and deflect Mudy's shot wide.
Cleveland put the icing on Cameron Craig's birthday cake in the 72nd minute when Craig scored his secong goal, on an assist from Nick Van Marter, and the Warriors completed a convincing 4-1 victory over the #7 ranked team in division 5A.
The Warriors now move on to a quarterfinal match on Saturday 11/10 on the road against #2 Summit High in Bend, time TBA. We hope as many Cleveland fans as possible can make it over the mountains to cheer on their Warriors!
