Duke Named National Semi-Finalist for HOBY

February 3, 2014
By Wynette Jameson of Clear Creek High School

Award Ashton Duke, a junior at Clear Creek High School, is one of 12 national semi-finalists for the HOBY Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Duke, who serves a Junior Class President, was nominated for his work in organizing and implementing Splash Out Lupus, a fundraiser for the Lupus Foundation – Texas Gulf Coast Chapter in honor of a fellow classmate who suffers from the disease.

Duke rallied the Clear Creek ISD high school swim teams to collect pledges for every lap they would swim during a practice. Each swimmer was encouraged to swim up to 100 laps. Swimmers from Clear Creek, Clear Brook, Clear Falls and Clear Lake High School participated in Splash Out Lupus. The Lupus Foundation was presented with a check from Duke and the CCISD swimmers at the district swim meet on Feb. 1 for $12,554.

Last year, Duke attended the Texas Gulf Coast HOBY Leadership seminar held at Texas A&M University-Galveston campus. One sophomore from more than 220 area high schools were represented at the seminar with seven, including Duke, invited to attend the week-long World Leadership Congress at Loyola University last July. The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership – HOBY - programs provide youth with unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences. Founded in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students. The HOBY Outstanding Young Alumni Award recognizes a HOBY alumni under the age of 25 that “puts an exclamation point on their HOBY experience.”

Duke is a member of Clear Creek’s Varsity Tennis and Swim teams and competes in UIL Computer Science. Twice he has been named a Superintendent’s Scholar and is a member of numerous honor societies.
