Help a fellow swimmer-Splash out lupus
August 30, 2013By Wynette Jameson of Clear Creek High School
It’s hard to believe that a new school year is upon us. I am writing in hopes that you and your swim team will take part in what I hope will be a district-wide community service project to help a fellow swimmer.
Last year, I sat next to a friend and fellow swim teammate in my pre-AP Calculus class. There were many days that my friend missed school. When he would return after his absences, he was upbeat but I could tell he wasn’t feeling well. He never complained, always had a cheerful disposition and gave it his all in the classroom and at swim practice.
My friend suffers from Lupus. Lupus is an auto-immune disease that can affect any part of the body. The disease is a mystery as to why people get it. After seeing first-hand how my friend suffers, I decided I wanted to make a difference and help solve the mystery of lupus.
That is why I am writing you. Over the summer, I mapped out a plan to raise money to go toward lupus research through the Lupus Foundation-Texas Gulf Coast Chapter. I have done a lot of planning and have met with my principal, swim coach and the Clear Creek ISD athletic directors Bill Daws and Debbie Fuchs. All are very supportive of the first annual Splash Out Lupus – An H2O Event benefiting the Lupus Foundation.
My hope is for Splash Out Lupus to involve the five Clear Creek ISD high school swim teams. Splash Out Lupus is patterned like a walk-a-thon but instead of walking, swimmers will swim laps. Splash Out Lupus will work with your support. I am asking swimmers to collect pledges for each lap they plan to swim, up to 100 laps. The laps for the fundraiser would then be swum during one of your practices the week of Sept. 16. All pledges and monies collected would need to be turned in by Sept. 30. I can come to your school to collect the contributions at your convenience.
It would be great if each swimmer could raise $100.
I am willing to come to your school to talk about Splash Out Lupus with your team, hand out pledge forms and answer any questions.
All checks should be made out to Lupus Foundation-Texas Gulf Coast Chapter or LF-TGCC. Any contribution is tax-deductible and receipts will be mailed from the Lupus Foundation for any contribution over $50.
The Splash Out Lupus fundraiser could easily serve as your team’s annual community service project and help out a fellow swimmer at the same time.
If you have any questions, please feel free to respond to this email or call me. I have attached a flyer as well as a pledge sheet for Splash Out Lupus. If you know of any other high school swim teams who may want to participate in this event, please feel free to forward the information or my contact information.
I appreciate your consideration in giving your team the opportunity to participate in Splash Out Lupus – An H2O Event benefiting the Lupus Foundation.
