Announcements for 02.13.13
February 13, 2013By Wynette Jameson of Clear Creek High School
Choir-First, congratulations to senior Nick Leach. Yesterday, he was named the 2013 winner of the Bay Area Chorus Elizabeth Dennard Music Education Scholarship. Selected as a finalist through his application, he performed yesterday in concert with the Bay Area Chorus, singing an audition alongside the other 3 finalists for an audience and panel of judges. He beat out a three-year All-Stater from Texas City HS, an accomplished young lady from Deer Park HS, and a 2-year All-Stater from Friendswood HS to be awarded this scholarship. If you have Nick as a student, please help us congratulate him for being awarded this honor.
Second, this week is the week when our All-Staters go to San Antonio to rehearse and perform in the All-State Choirs. Four auditions over the course of four months led to this week’s festivities which include 3 days of intensive rehearsals with nationally-renowned conductors, culminating in a performance before an audience of thousands. Congratulations go out again to Damon Duckett, Nick Leach, Jesse Pilgrim, Brian Ritter, and Michael Skarke.
Finally, in a recent faculty meeting, Mr. Bockart referred to an upcoming second performance with the Houston Symphony. That performance is this week. On Friday, our Chamber Singers return to the Jones Hall to perform with the Houston Symphony and the 6-time Grammy-award winning Irish pop group The Chieftains. The Chieftains are on their 50th-anniversary tour and making a stop in Houston, and the Symphony asked us to be the choir on their performance. The Chieftains have been nominated for 18 Grammys and have collaborated with such notable artists as Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Roger Daltry, Bon Iver, Bela Fleck, Tom Jones, Art Garfunkel, Sting, Ziggy Marley, Lyle Lovett, Ricky Skaggs, Willie Nelson, and many, many more. They are known to this day as musical ambassadors of Ireland, being hailed as the first Irish pop group to gain prominence on the world stage. If you are interested in seeing the performance, tickets are available for purchase at the Houston Symphony website.
