Home » Boys' Basketball News2010 Boy's Basketball Season PreviewDecember 21, 2009 Clay County High SchoolClay County enters its 4th season under head coach, Kevin Spurlock. For the first time in a few years the roster will include a number of upperclassmen in the junior and senior classes as the program has been in a reconstruction phase. This group will be led by 4 year starter, DJ Wilson, who will join a select group of players to have ever started 4 years at Clay County. The team this year is expected to challenge for the 13th Region Championship which has eluded them since 2001. They will have to battle the likes of Corbin (defending champion), South Laurel (led by 6'9 D-1 prospect, Matt St. John), and Knox Central (led by All-Regional player, Cody Miller) along with other up and coming programs throughout the region. They will once again play one of the toughest schedules in the state which includes participating in events like the KBA Classic at the Frankfort Civic Center, the Bobby Keith Classic, the Defenders of the Station Invitational, the Big Red Shoot-Out, and the WYMT Mountain Classic. Outside region opponents will include the likes of Franklin County, Henry Clay, Bryan Station, Wayne County, Madison Central, Lexington Catholic, Louisville Trinity, Desales, and Tates Creek. We will also battle with in-region rivals such as Corbin, Knox Central, North Laurel, Bell County, Harlan County, Pineville, South Laurel, and Middlesboro. The Tigers will be ranked #1 in the preseason ratings for the 13th region and although it will bring some added pressure for the season it is a thing that they have worked hard during the last 3 years to achieve and the hope is that they will not only be able to maintain that ranking at the end of the season but to be able to continue it for years to come. On a side note, the Tigers lost the services of starting point guard, JV Hooker, to a torn ACL which will require him to miss the entire season. This is a huge loss for the team but if they can get some players to step up their game then this regional championship goal is still attainable. We wish JV a speedy and successful recovery.
