BASKETBALL TRIVIA

March 11, 2014
Northwest Montana A Conference

Can Anybody Say "Shot Clock"!

Montana we really do need a shot clock!  Over the weekend at the state "A" boys basketball tournament the teams averaged less than 50 points a game!  The average score per team was only 46.8!  Forty-Six points a game....ARE YOU KIDDING ME"!  Do you realize that is the lowest scoring class "A" state tournament of all time!  It is also 13 points behind where we were back in the 1980's!

So everybody at once...."WE NEED A SHOT CLOCK"!

WHICH TEAM IS THE TRAVEL CHAMPS THIS WEEK FOR STATE TOURNAMENTS?

So what high school basketball team has to travel the furthest this weekend for state tournaments?  It'll be 463 miles for Glacier to travel toBillingsfor the state 'AA', 486 miles for the co-op Saco-Whitewater to go toHamiltonfor the state 'C' girls, and the distance champs for 2014 are the girls from Hinsdale will travel 530 miles one way toHamilton.  By the way,Hinsdalehas only 30 students in their entire high school! Their gir's basketball team has qualified in 4 of the last 6 state 'C' tournament.

He Is The State's Biggest Eighth Grader!

How would you like to play Valley Christian's 8th grade boys basketball team this season?  They have the state's biggest junior high player in Brian Gragg!  Brian comes in at 6-9 and 305 pounds!  His dad is someone most of you know....Scott Gragg the Assistant Head Coach for the Montana Grizzlies football team!  Scott started 38 games for the Griz and played 11 seasons in the NFL for the New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets!  Scott told me that Brian gets a lot of thriple doubles this season in points, rebounds and block shots!

Defense Wins Games!

You know it's true what they say.....defense wins games!  Just look at what took place in the Super Bowl over the weekend!  Let's take a look at high school basketball this season:   Dillon is the top ranked team in class "A" and they have the best defense giving up just 41 points per game!  In "AA" Helena Capital has the best win-loss record and they are gving up the fewest points!

In girls hoops it's the same story!  In "AA" two time state champion Missoula Sentinel is the top ranked team in the state and they are number one giving up just 31 points a game!  In class "A" number one Columbia Falls is giving up just 34 points a game!  Than in "B" top ranked Fairfield is giving up just 34 points a game, while second ranked Malta is giving up just 23 points a game!  On the season 14-0 Malta has held six teams to less than 20 points!

14-0 Malta Girls Are Lead By A Freshman!

The Malta girls only have one senior on their team and thats Merecedes Stiles!   They also start a freshman by the name of Sophia Stiles.  Sophia is leading the team in scoring this year.

Best Freshman I Have Ever Seen!

I have announced the game of high school basketball for more than 30 years, and the very best freshman that I have ever seen play the game is Brendan Howard of Great Falls High!  Over the weekend I announced the Billings West - Great Falls High game!  West lead the entire way until freshman Brendan Howard scored to put Great Falls on top with just 22 seconds left to play!  For someone 6-4 Brendan is very quick and is a very smart player!  He is the first freshman to lead "AA" in rebounding and is in the top 10 in scoring!

By the way Great Falls High is very young this season!  They only start one senior and have three freshman on the varsity roster!

Fairview Basketball Alone At The Top!

Of the 188 highs schools that offer basketball for both boy and girls we only have one school that is left without a loss!  That is Fairview....the boys are 10-0 and ranked 4th while the girls are 10-0 and ranked 5th!
