C/KAT SPORTS RADIO ANNOUNCER'S SONS DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETES
March 4, 2014By Terry Werner of Columbia Falls High School
LETTER FROM MIKE AND SHANA (FORMER KAT STAND OUT ATHLETE):
As many of you know, our son Taite was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on 01/03/2009 at 1.5 years old. He has spent the last 5 years living well with Diabetes. We returned from vacation this year to our youngest son displaying some of the same signs we saw weeks before Taite was diagnosed, extreme thirst, urination, and slight weight loss. While on vacation, we chalked it up to extreme Las Vegas heat. Having the equipment to test his blood at home, we discovered Trevor’s blood sugar was 500, a normal reading would have been between 70-100. Trevor was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on 06/14/2013, he is 3 years old.
People tell us all the time there is no way they could do what we do, take care of two kids with Type 1 Diabetes. When really, that’s not true, they could and would if they had to. When you have no choice, when both of your kids’ lives depend on it, you get tough really quick. You put the emotions aside (until late in the night) and you figure out what you have to do to make it happen.
We are also often asked why both of our kids? In moments of self-pity, we’ve asked the same. In truth, we have no idea and neither does anyone else. Is it genetics, environment, or bad luck? Who knows? What we do know, it feels a whole lot better to be actively involved in finding a cure, than wondering why and feeling sorry that our picture of ‘perfect’ didn’t develop just so.
Our fundraising for JDRF started as a way to raise money and over the last 5 years has evolved to not only raising money, but awareness and our spirits. We have met other Type 1 families along the way, seen friends’ children be diagnosed, and gained another Type 1 child ourselves. While it could seem this year we’d be sad, really we are just doubly determined.
Team Taite is now Team TnT – Taite and Trevor. If you are able to donate to our team, please visit the boy’s websites listed below and donate what you can, every dollar helps! The boys have also included a copy of their JDRF letters as well. You can also mail a check to our home, and we will forward it to JDRF under our team name. Please send checks to 14 Ford Way, Kalispell, MT 59901. If you are unable to donate, we understand, we thank you for your time and support all the same. Please feel free to forward this email.
We believe there will be a cure, this isn’t forever.
My name is Taite Randal Hammer and I have Type 1 Diabetes. I'm in 1st grade in Mrs. Robins class, 1a. My favorite subject at school is math. I like to sing at music and play freeze tag at gym. There are no other kids in my school with Diabetes. My nurse's name is Mrs. Johnson, she helps take care of me and my blood sugar.
I've had Type 1 Diabetes for 5 whole years and I'm 6 years old. I got Diabetes because my pancreas doesn't work. To get insulin, you tell the pump how much insulin you want by pressing buttons.
When I'm low, I feel kinda sleepy and tired. I feel icky inside. When I'm high, I feel like I want to run around.
We're trying to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. We give the money to JDRF. I think they'll find a cure because there are smart people there, like doctors and scientists.
I was sad when my brother got Diabetes because I was worried that he had to get tested too. I just didn't want him to have Diabetes.
Please help us find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes for everyone that has it. Thank you
Taite Randal Hammer.
My name is Trevor Stevin Hammer Shark Man. I am 3 years old.
I just got Diabetes. My pump is in my pocket. My brother is Taite Randal Hammer, he is 6 years old, he has Diabetes like me.
I like the Diabetes walk because I like to walk and get pulled in a wagon. I have a red Diabetes bracelet.
I promise I can do a kick. I promise.
