The Columbia Falls High School volleyball team should put a few more games in the win column this season. The team features a host of returning players and a new head coach in Josie Brown.
Brown is no stranger to the program, however. She was head coach 10 years ago and has been coaching at the junior high since then. She took the helm this year after Addy Connelly resigned and is looking forward to this season.
“We’ve got a lot of good athletes,” she said during practice last week.
The team welcomes back several players from last year, including juniors Ciera Finberg and Winter Kemppainen, and seniors Tiffany Hummer and Haley Belgarde.
The team also has a solid freshman class, including Cydney Finberg, Morgan Stenger and Kiara Burlage. Stenger is nearly six feet tall, and Finberg and Burlage are 5-10 and 5-11. The future bodes well.
“We’re working on filling the holes on defense and playing a quicker offense,” Brown said.
All told, 28 girls made the squad. Brown is assisted by junior varsity coach Jolandie Brooks and Jessyca Matthews.
The girls played together in summer camps and have good chemistry, Brown said.
Frenchtown is the team to beat in the conference, and the girls haven’t beaten Whitefish at home in years. This may be the year they break that cycle. The girls will open the long season on the road on Aug. 31 with games against Hamilton and Corvallis.
