Rams top Wildcats in State A opener

Billings Central blew a 19-5 lead in the opening game of the State Class A girls’ basketball tournament this afternoon at the Butte Civic Center.

The defending champions, though, regrouped and beat No. 1-ranked Columbia Falls 51-49 to advance to Friday’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal game.

The Rams will take on the winner of the Butte Central-Browning game. Columbia Falls heads to loser-out play.

Junior guard Allie Lucas scored 25 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Rams, who won despite being outscored 26-6 in the second quarter. Lucas also dished out seven assists and collected nine steals. Billings Central forced 31 turnovers.

Justyn Juhl scored 12 points, while Sammy Elliot tossed in 10.

Haley Belgrade scored 19 points to lead the Wildcats.

Lucas leads Central over Columbia Falls •  

BUTTE -- Allie Lucas had 25 points, six rebounds, seven assists and nine steals Thursday to lead Billings Central to a 61-49 victory over Columbia Falls in the first round of the Class A girls state basketball tournament at the Civic Center.

After taking a big first-quarter lead, the Rams (15-7) found themselves down eight points at halftime. But the 5-foot-5 Lucas scored 16 points and shot 10 for 10 from the foul line in the second half to lead the comeback.

Justyn Juhl scored 12 points and had seven rebounds for Central, while Sammy Elliott chipped in 10 points and six boards.

Haley Belgarde led Columbia Falls (17-5) with 19 points. Winter Kemppainen pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for the Wildkats.

Central will face either Butte Central or Browning in the semifinal round Friday.
